American Jewish Cultural History

 

    The Peddler’s Grandson: Growing Up Jewish in Mississippi by Edward Cohen (University Press of Mississippi).  The author reflects on the experiences of three generations of his family as Jewish merchants in the predominantly non-Jewish deep south of America.

 

    In search of American Jewish Culture by Stephen J. Whitfield (Brandeis University Press of New England).  A close look at how Jews have changed American popular culture and, in turn, have been changed by it.
    Finding a Spiritual Home: How a New Generation of Jews Can Transform the American Synagogue by Sidney Schwartz (Jossey-Bass).  The author speaks to what he perceives as the failure of traditional synagogue practices to meet the spiritual needs of current and future generations of American Jews. Using as models four synagogues that have recently undergone “transformation”, he promotes a vision of renewal for the synagogue as a major component of a more satisfying and enriching Jewish life.

 

    Jewish Women in America: An Historical Encyclopedia edited by Paula Hyman and Deborah Dash Moore (Routledge, 2 vols.)  800 biographies of contemporary Jewish women who have had profound impacts upon all aspects of American culture, politics and society.

Torah Study

In the beginning ...

This month, at Simchat Torah , we begin the Torah reading cycle all over again, with Bereshit. In Shabbat morning Torah study we'll continue our study at the beginning. These lay-lead sessions meet every Saturday morning from 9:00-10:00 a.m. in the Temple library. Come join any session for interesting discussion, learning, and a little nosh! Shabbat Morning Learner's Minyan

Evolving out of Saturday morning Torah study, the Saturday Morning Learner's Minyan follows Torah study once per month, for approximately one hour, beginning at 10:30 a.m. We begin with a short meditation, followed by shachrit (morning) service, lead by Lise Rosenthal. Each session includes a focus and teaching on one aspect of the service. We are using a draft of the new siddur being developed by the URJ, Mishkan T'filah. All are welcome to participate. Sessions are scheduled for Oct. 30th and November 20th.

Aleph Isn’t Tough! Basic Hebrew class
The first step in learning to read Hebrew. The class began on Sept. 29, and will be meeting on Wednesdays, 7:30 pm, for an hour in the TBI office. Taught by Linda Ourach. Not too late to join.

Jewish Ethics discussion group will be held on Wednesdays, in the Social Hall, for one hour beginning November 17 at 7:30 p.m. Led by Jay Trachman.
